It is presumed that students already have a good working knowledge of grammar and a satisfactory vocabulary. This course provides a linguistic overview of features of the English language: How phonology can improve English pronunciation; how insights into morphology insights can improve knowledge of word formation and develop vocabulary and how strictly syntactic rules influence the formation of sentences in English. The overall aim is to improve teachers' command of the language so that they can better explain and illustrate its features to learners in their classrooms.

Literature of the English-speaking World

Academic Reading:

Academic reading is an active process that involves much more than reading and highlighting text. You need to have  a purpose/reason for reading  which guides your interaction with the text and helps you to summarise the content by taking notes that are relevant and useful to you. You need to read the latest text to extend what you already know, or have already experienced. Above all, you must develop the ability to question what you already know by asking critical questions about the material you are reading.

Academic Reading uses a range of reading strategies: prediction, surveying, skimming, scanning, analysis, reading in detail and summarising.

By the end of this course, you will know how to use each of these strategies efficiently and, through them, you will be able to read a lot more.

Academic writing: Grammar, Punctuation, Paraphrasing, Referencing, writing Paragraphs, and Conclusions.

Academic Listening: reviewing and predicting topics, encaging with topic, focussing on stressed words, paying attention to repeated terms and pauses, being able to summarise and reflect.

Academic Speaking is designed for students whose English speaking skills need improvement. The objective of the course is to strengthen all aspects of speaking ability, especially in academic contexts. Students receive feedback on assignments
